5K Run for Reunion
Become a City Walk Host This October
It will soon be that time of the year for our 2nd annual 5K Walk/Run for Reunion. For those who aren't familiar, Nanchang Project hosted our first ever hybrid fundraising event last year, during which participants could register to walk/run a 5K virtually (i.e. on their own time between October 1-15) OR walk/run with other Nanchang Project community members at one of our city meetups. Last year, we hosted an in-person walk across 5 cities (Washington DC, NYC, Boston, San Diego, and Chicago), had over 120 participants, and raised over $3,000 for DNA testing birth families in China. This year, we are hoping to keep that momentum going and get more people involved!
We currently have committed volunteers to host in Washington DC, New York City, Orlando, and San Diego, and are looking to expand the number of cities that are hosting an in-person walk/run. If you are interested in leading a 5K walk/run and social event afterwards in a different city nearest you, please fill out the interest form below by May 22nd, 2026 and we will get back to you shortly.
Participation in this event is open to everyone—runners, non-runners, adoptees, non-adoptees, friends, family, allies, dogs, cats, etc.—anywhere in the world. We encourage you to spread the word, gather your friends, and enjoy the outdoors while supporting family reunion.
Host Requirements/Time Commitment:
Must be available on a Saturday or Sunday during October 1-15, 2026 to lead and host the walk/run.
Must be able to organize a safe and fun 5K walk/run route in your city (we expect groups small enough to not require a formal permit).
Must be able to organize a casual social hangout after the 5K (coffee shop, brewery, café, etc.) near the 5K meetup spot.
Must be able to respond in a timely fashion through email/Slack to coordinate planning with Nanchang Project fundraising organizers, answer questions from participants, and generally be communicative with us. We may also have 1 or 2 virtual meetings throughout the planning process to answer questions and ensure alignment.
Must be comfortable talking to participants, making everyone feel welcomed, and representing Nanchang Project.
City Walk Host Interest Form
Submit your interest by May 22nd, 2026.
How Does Our Virtual 5K Work?
Later this year, after 5K City Walk locations are confirmed, registration for the event will go live. Participant registration fees are on a sliding scale starting at $20 USD. The registration form will include the option to sign up for one of our City Walks or to participate remotely anywhere in the world.
Download a fitness app such as Strava, Apple Fitness, Google Fit, Samsung Health, etc. Ensure that the application can track distance traveled and time. This is not a strict requirement (it’s optional for 5K participation), but we will be raffling off prizes to participants who submit a screenshot of their 5K results and a fun action photo.
If you are participating remotely, run or walk a 5K around your neighborhood or a local trail anytime between October 1-15, 2025. You are more than welcome to encourage a group of friends and family to participate in the event together! Don’t forget to start your fitness app and take a photo.
If you are participating at one of our City Walks, show up at the designated location and time to participate in the 5K Walk. Enjoy the walk and take the opportunity to connect with Nanchang Project volunteers and supporters in person. More detailed instructions will be sent to you via email as we get closer to the event if you registered for a regional walk.
Submit your results (a screenshot of your 5K time and an optional photo) through our 5K Results Form to be entered into our prize raffle and leaderboard. The results submission form will be located below in October and sent to participants via email.
